Beer Reviewer: Eric
A stout is my beer of choice for this winter month because it is light in carbonation, goes great with desserts/nightcap beers, and is high in alcohol. If you’re looking for a nice dessert beer for that Valentine’s evening – a stout is what you’re looking for. Both guys and gals drink stouts with enthusiasm because they’re easy to sip on, smooth, and generally have a nice chocolate aroma and taste. Pair this stout with strawberries and ice cream to create a chocolate creamy delight party in your mouth. You and your lucky date will get intoxicated quite quickly on a drink that is much smoother than red wine.
Before taking a sip, I pour a nice full pint of the beer in the Golden Gate BrewTours custom pint (which you’ll get as a guest on our tour). The head is a nice fluffy light brown with strong aromas of raisins, plums, espresso and alcohol. Enticed, I decide to continue enjoy my much needed beer.
I take my first sip, noticing the immediate smooth texture of the beer with a very light carbonation. As it tingles on the tongue, strong notes of raisins, spices, and roasted coffee beans are prevalent. The beer leaves my palate refreshed with a creamy roasted coffee and chocolate aftertaste. You’ll definitely be able to tell that this beer is loaded with alcohol and it’s not afraid to let you know.
This stout is strong, powerful, and goes well with a dessert or snack with a movie. One pint will probably get you feeling pretty good and your mouth won’t be overwhelmed with a sticky maltiness. My only criticism of the Lagunitas Imperial Stout is that it has moments of an acidic aftertaste that at times emphasize the strength of the beer too much.
